Medicines Manufacturing Foundry

Project Overview

CPI delivered a bespoke 3-day event programme designed specifically for innovative SMEs, academic researchers and staff aspiring to spinout from Scotland's universities, as well as research institutes and NHS Boards. The programme focused on addressing the common challenges faced when scaling manufacturing processes for pharmaceutical innovations, and on building an active and vibrant community, where Scottish-based innovators can exchange ideas, learn from each other and collaborate on addressing grand challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry.

Impact

The event – along with targeted one-to-one engagement before and after - delivered tangible benefits for participants, including:

  • Connected Scottish innovators to major multinational pharmaceutical companies and technology providers.
  • Increased engagement from Scottish companies in globally relevant medicines manufacturing collaborations.
  • Connected researchers with new funding and investment opportunities.
  • Introduced participants to broader innovation ecosystems and networks
  • Generated new ideas for grand challenge projects to be delivered within Scotland and involving elements of the Scottish innovation ecosystem.

Since completing the project CPI has closely supported several of the companies including one company who secured funding to drive the creation of a large multimillion pound project to transform medicines manufacturing. This project demonstrates how targeted industry-specific support can address critical gaps in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, particularly at the interface between academic research and commercial application, and help overcome challenges to collaborating with the global medicines manufacturing industry on the major challenges that they face through improved accessibility to relevant companies and clients, better awareness of challenges being faced, and addressing the costs and risks associated with forming new partnerships between likeminded organisations.
